Margie Bissinger is a physical therapist, certified integrative health coach, author, and happiness trainer. Margie has over 25 years of experience helping people with osteoporosis and osteopenia improve their bone health through a comprehensive integrative approach. She hosts the Happy Bones, Happy Life Podcast and hosted two summits on Natural Approaches to Osteoporosis and Bone Health. Margie oversees all the osteoporosis initiatives for the state of New Jersey as a physical therapy representative to the NJ Interagency Council on Osteoporosis.

FAQs: Your Questions Answered

Can osteoporosis be reversed?

Whether osteoporosis can be reversed naturally depends on how severe it is. I consistently see in my patients and R&R students, severe osteoporosis reversed to mild osteoporosis, moderate and mild osteoporosis reverse to osteopenia, and mild to moderate osteopenia reversed to normal.

Usually, natural methods do not improve bone mineral density by more than 0.8 SD in a T score over 2 to 4 years.

Will osteoporosis go away on its own?

Osteoporosis usually leads to a decrease of 1-2% per year in your bone mineral density.

However, the steps we teach in the R&R program can halt this progression and possibly even lead to better bone mineral density over time.

Does this program help me find the right osteoporosis supplements?

A big part of this program is to get you on the right bone-supporting basic supplements, along with identifying your root causes of bone loss through testing and supporting those pathways.

Can osteoporosis be fatal?

Certainly, if you are extremely fragile and break your hip and end up in a nursing home, your odds are not good for a full recovery. In fact, what I have heard from my patients and students about their mom or grandmom is that it is usually the second fall that is fatal. The first fall, they usually recover from, but a fragile body can easily become bedridden after an event like that, and then many times it’s at that point they give up.

Once my mom became bedridden, it was less than 2 years before she had a serious infection, and then she passed. At the time of her passing, we were sad, but relieved she was no longer suffering, the common feeling of so many loved ones in that situation. Fortunately, our program concentrates on strength and reversal of fragility long before you are in this situation.

Is there a good osteoporosis diet you cover in the program?

Food is your most important starting point in any quest to reverse a chronic condition. Our Bone Healthy Diet is full of good foods! You will learn about the proper amount of protein for your body to build strong muscles, the organ of longevity and bone strength.

This diet is brightly colored, with high phytonutrient density, lots of bone essential minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins. It will feed your microbiome with adequate prebiotic fiber and fermented foods. It will ease pain and inflammation by evaluating your specific food sensitivities and getting rid of the ones that cause your body to be inflamed. Along with this, a diet full of oxalates is not your bones’ friend. We will teach you how to strike a balance between enjoying some of the high-oxalate foods you love and avoiding the painful oxalate crystal chaos that chips away at your bones and body.

By following the Bone Healthy Diet, you will turn a food liability into a food asset.

Do I need to take bone tests for the program?

Most assessments are self-evaluated. However, to get the maximum benefit from the program, lab testing is recommended. You can request lab tests through your doctor or order them yourself for a deeper understanding of your bone health. We provide a recommended list of tests for your convenience.

Will insurance cover the tests?

Some tests may be covered by insurance if your doctor requests them.

Will Dr. Millman interpret my results personally?

How will I know if the program is working?

You may notice improvements in your symptoms and bone relevant labs including bone markers such as CTX in as little as 100 days. However, improvements in DEXA scans typically take longer to see.
